However, an early reader of the script pointed out that the rose—long associated with England—felt out of place in a story so rooted in Scottish identity. Wallace agreed, and the rose was replaced with a thistle, the national symbol of Scotland. Later in the film, there’s a moment where William gives something back to Murron.
